I've torn out more failed paver jobs than I can count. Beautiful pavers installed on inadequate bases, shifting within years. It's heartbreaking—and preventable.

The Foundation of Good Pavers

Excavation Depth

We excavate 6-8 inches for patios, deeper for driveways. This sounds like overkill until you see what happens to shallow installations.

Compacted Base

We use crushed aggregate, compacted in 2-inch layers. Each layer is compacted to 95% maximum density. This creates a stable, unyielding foundation.

Proper Slope

Every surface slopes away from structures at 1% minimum. This seems minor but prevents water damage over years.

Edge Restraints

Pavers need to be contained, or they migrate outward. We use buried edge restraints that keep everything locked in place.

💡 Pro Tip

Ask to see cross-section photos of a contractor's base preparation. If they can't show you, that tells you something.
