Outdoor kitchens are one of the most requested features we build. They're also one of the most commonly screwed up by other contractors.
Here are the 5 mistakes I fix over and over again.
Mistake #1: Wrong Grill Placement
The grill should face away from prevailing winds AND your seating area. Nobody wants smoke in their face—or their guests' faces.
Mistake #2: Inadequate Counter Space
You need prep space, landing space for plates, and serving space. Cramped counters make cooking miserable.
Mistake #3: No Shade
Grilling in direct LA sun is brutal. Plan for a pergola or umbrella from the start—retrofitting is expensive.
Mistake #4: Cheap Appliances
Outdoor appliances need to be OUTDOOR-rated. Indoor appliances rust, corrode, and fail. We partner with Lynx, Twin Eagles, and other proven brands.
Mistake #5: Poor Electrical Planning
Outlets, lighting, and potentially gas lines all need planning. Running these after the island is built is expensive and messy.
Elan was very responsive and not pushy at all. He got the vision and ran with it. We ended up doing pavers, turf, built-in BBQ and pergola. — Chris Menendez
💡 Pro Tip
Include a small refrigerator—you'll thank yourself every time you don't have to run inside for drinks.
