The #1 Backyard Mistake I See: Forgetting About the Sun

The Mistake That Costs Thousands

I can't tell you how many times I've walked into a consultation and seen a beautiful outdoor kitchen sitting unused. Or a stunning patio with furniture that's too hot to touch. Or a pool deck where nobody sits because there's nowhere to escape the sun.

The #1 mistake I see in backyard design isn't cheap materials or poor drainage—it's forgetting about the sun.

LA Sun Is Different

If you moved here from somewhere else, you might not fully appreciate this yet. LA sun is intense. From May through October, unshaded surfaces can reach 150°F. That beautiful travertine? It'll burn your feet. That outdoor sofa? The cushions fade in one season.

Shade isn't a luxury here—it's a requirement for a usable outdoor space.

Shade Solutions That Work

Pergolas & Covered Patios

Permanent shade structures are the gold standard. A solid-roof pergola blocks sun completely while a lattice pergola filters light beautifully. Cost: $20,000-50,000 depending on size and materials.

Shade Sails

More affordable and architecturally interesting. They create geometric patterns of shade and can be removed seasonally. Cost: $2,000-8,000 installed.

Strategic Tree Placement

The long game. A well-placed tree provides natural shade and increases property value. But it takes years to mature. Think 10-15 years for meaningful shade.

The Right Way to Plan

Before we finalize any design, I visit the property at different times of day. Where does the sun hit at 10am? At 2pm? At 5pm? Understanding the sun's path completely changes how we orient structures, place seating, and design the space.

Elan insisted we add the pergola. I thought it was overkill. Now it's the only reason we use the patio. — Brooke W.

💡 Pro Tip

Visit your backyard at 2pm on a summer day. Stand where you plan to put furniture. If you can't be comfortable for 10 minutes, you won't use that space.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the best pergola material for shade?

Aluminum with solid panels blocks the most sun. Wood lattice creates beautiful filtered light but less protection.

Can I add shade to an existing patio?

Absolutely. Retrofit pergolas, shade sails, and patio covers can be added to most existing spaces.
