Material comparison

Pavers vs concrete: which is right for your yard?

An honest side-by-side from a contractor who installs both.

Poured concrete is cheaper up front and works well for simple, flat, low-movement areas. Pavers cost more per square foot but flex with soil movement, can be repaired in sections, drain better and generally look better longer — which is why most LA remodels end up in pavers.

Repairability

pavers win — lift and reset

Cracking and soil movement

Concrete cracks — the question is only where and when. Pavers move with the soil instead of fracturing.

Los Angeles has expansive clay soils in many neighborhoods and real seismic movement everywhere. Concrete handles that with control joints, which are essentially planned cracks.

A paver field absorbs the same movement across thousands of joints, and any settled area can be lifted and reset without a visible patch.

Real cost over time

Concrete is cheaper to install and more expensive to fix; pavers are the reverse.

  • Concrete repair means saw-cutting and pouring a section that never color-matches
  • Paver repair means pulling and resetting the affected units
  • Utility access under pavers doesn't destroy the surface

When concrete is the right call

Choose concrete for side yards, utility slabs, equipment pads and budget-driven large flatwork.

  • Areas nobody looks at
  • Very large driveways on a tight budget
  • Modern designs that specifically want monolithic slabs with turf joints

Where porcelain fits

Porcelain pavers stay cooler underfoot, resist stains and hold color, which makes them the premium choice around pools.
