LA's Most-Requested Outdoor Feature

If I had to name the single most-requested feature across all our projects, it's a fire pit with built-in seating. It beats pools, outdoor kitchens, even pergolas. There's something primal about gathering around fire — and in LA's climate, you can use one 300+ nights per year.

Types of Fire Pits We Build in LA

Rectangular fire pit with travertine bench seating and decorative fire glass

Linear Fire Pits

The most popular style for modern homes. A long, rectangular fire trough (typically 48"-72") set into a concrete or stone base. They pair perfectly with contemporary architecture and L-shaped seating. Cost: $4,000-$12,000.

Round Fire Pits

Traditional and inviting. A circular fire pit (36"-48" diameter) encourages conversation by letting everyone face each other. Great for casual entertaining. Cost: $3,000-$8,000.

Sunken Fire Pits

Recessed into the patio with built-in bench seating around the perimeter. Creates an intimate, amphitheater-like gathering space. Cost: $15,000-$30,000.

Gas vs. Wood-Burning in LA: The Verdict

This is easy: go gas. The South Coast AQMD restricts wood burning on many days during winter. Gas fire pits are exempt, start with one button, produce no smoke or ash, and have automatic shut-offs. Natural gas costs roughly $0.50-$1.00/hour to operate.

Built-In Seating Options

  • Travertine bench walls: 18" high stone walls with bullnose caps. $150-$250/linear foot.
  • Poured concrete benches: Modern, seamless look. $200-$350/linear foot.
  • Built-in planter-to-bench combos: Planters on the ends with bench seating between. $4,000-$8,000.
  • Freestanding furniture: Adirondack chairs, sectional sofas — flexible but less permanent. $2,000-$8,000.

Fire Pit Patio Materials

  • Travertine pavers: Natural stone, cool underfoot, non-slip. $15-$25/sqft installed.
  • Porcelain pavers: Modern look, extremely durable, stain-resistant. $18-$30/sqft installed.
  • Concrete pavers: Most affordable, huge color/pattern variety. $12-$20/sqft installed.
  • Stamped concrete: Seamless look, fastest installation. $10-$18/sqft installed.

  • Premium: 600+ sqft porcelain patio + sunken fire pit + pergola = $45,000 – $75,000

Frequently Asked Questions

Do fire pits need permits in LA?

Gas fire pits under 100,000 BTU typically don't require a separate permit, but the gas line installation does need a plumbing permit. We handle this as part of every project.

How far does a fire pit need to be from my house?

LAFD requires a minimum 10-foot clearance from any structure. We typically recommend 15 feet for comfort and safety. Overhead clearance from pergolas must be at least 8 feet.

Can I add a fire pit to an existing patio?

Yes! We retrofit fire pits into existing patios regularly. Gas line installation through or under the patio is straightforward. Budget $5,000-$15,000 for a retrofit.
