Built-In BBQ Contractor in Los Angeles: What's Different

A built-in BBQ is more than 'a grill in a box.' Code requires proper non-combustible framing, vent clearance, gas line sizing to BTU load, and (in covered installs) a UL-listed outdoor vent hood. Skip any of these and you'll fail inspection — or worse, have a fire.

Gas Line Sizing — The Detail Most BBQ Contractors Miss

A premium grill draws 70,000–150,000 BTU. Add a side burner (15,000), sear station (25,000), and pizza oven (60,000) and you're at 250,000+ BTU. Standard 1/2" residential gas line maxes out around 100,000 BTU at 25 ft. Real BBQ contractors run 3/4" or 1" line, sized to total load with a manifold and shut-off.

Layout Rules That Matter

  • Minimum 24" of landing counter on each side of the grill
  • Sink at least 36" from the grill (food safety)
  • Refrigeration outside grill heat zone
  • Bar seating with 12–14" overhang and 18" knee depth
  • L or U shape works, straight line forces you to walk too much
  • Prevailing wind direction influences grill orientation

Built-In BBQ Pricing in LA

  • Basic island with mid-grade grill: $9,500–$16,000
  • Premium island (Lynx/DCS/Hestan grill, side burner, fridge): $22,000–$45,000
  • Full BBQ pavilion with bar, hood, multiple appliances: $55,000–$110,000+

💡 Pro Tip

If your contractor doesn't ask about your future appliance plans, they're not sizing your gas line for them. Plan for what you'll add in 5 years, not just what you're buying today.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a built-in BBQ cost in Los Angeles?

Basic islands $9,500–$16,000, premium $22,000–$45,000, full BBQ pavilions $55,000–$110,000+.

Do I need a permit for a built-in BBQ?

Yes for the gas line and any electrical. The masonry shell often doesn't require one, but no contractor should skip the gas permit.

What gas line size do I need?

1/2" line for a single grill under 100K BTU. 3/4" or 1" for premium setups with multiple appliances. Always sized by total BTU and run length.

Can I use natural gas or propane?

Both. Natural gas if your home has it (preferred — never run out). Propane requires a buried tank or visible bottle storage with proper ventilation.

Best grill brand for built-in?

Lynx, DCS, Hestan, Wolf at the premium end. Coyote and Fire Magic for mid-range. Avoid big-box-store inserts — they aren't built for permanent install.

Can a built-in BBQ go under a covered patio?

Yes if you install a UL-listed outdoor vent hood sized to grill BTU. Required by code in most LA jurisdictions for covered installs.
